Stef Bailey: Archivers/Documentarians...meeting on Wednesday is on, yes? Food for thought before we start:

Questions on documentation and archiving over the institution - ie. how does one expand beyond the institution without falling back into it's modes of operation/thinking?

Notes on archiving; what is it? how does it function? What is its purpose? ie. notions of archiving... Forms of documentation - dead writing vs. live discourse.. I'm thinking about my presentation - notes on the production of (social) space...

I found this site, and feel it touches on all of the above in some way, from my first reading of it...http://primaryinformation.org/ thoughts to add? Maybe we can have a meeting agenda? (i know it sounds "institutional" but it tends to keep things focused..and this comes from a rather disorganised person!) Up to you all. Xx
ps can someone forward this to Galia?

Baiba Jake:  There are some good resources that we should perhaps look at. I personally think that it would be great to look up some texts about archiving in general and debates surrounding them.
I myself am interested to look at texts by Hal Foster 'Archives of Modern Art' and Derrida 'Archive Fever'  http://www.art-omma.org/NEW/issue10/theory.html

SB: love this Baiba

Liza Mazza added Galia Kirilova to the conversation.

Wednesday 8th February

Stef Bailey: in relation http://www.theawl.com/2011/12/the-struggle-for-the-occupy-wall-street-archives The story of the Occupy Wall Street Archive starts with Jeremy Bold, so we might as well too. When Hollywood decides to cash in and make its OWS movie, central casting could do worse than work off a picture of Bold—he has a dark goatee and black plastic-rimmed glasses. He has a “protest name”&...

SB: notes! Please explain to them I won't be there tomorrow but I worked on this!! (Can someone sign me in anyway) Archive and documentation meeting 2.docx

Kiki Claxton: Of course! Are we wanting to put this document up on the blog blog? x

Thursday 9th February

Stef Bailey: Thoughts - we have come up with institutions to interact with based on our own knowledge input..ie...so far we have decided to do a pseudo-history of the organisation in MA LAB (maybe formation/deformation/reformation) and to use the Tate as a staging of its historicity - it is a spatio-temporal staging with specific time and space...then White Cube as notion of "white paper" ie. a blank canvas - a void or a notion of space - the potentialities of the undefined space...using White Cube as a staging for this (cf. ie. Malevich White on White, Yves Klein empty gallery, Doug Wheeler now at David Zwirner, ie. the space as a dialectic (Lefebvre) - maybe uncovering the White Cube dialectic? This brings in notions of cultural hegemony, currency, dissemination, and structuring within a purely conceptual framework, not grounded in space or time as such?

Within this, forms of production, ie. notions of political books, ie. Mao's red book, Gaddafi's Green book, White Paper dossiers, "Blue Books" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treachery_of_the_Blue_Books, even the Little Black Book and notions of dissemination, ie. Felix Gonzales Torres Passports, political pamphlet, the artist book...also as Anna mentioned, creative commons, the extension of virtual into the real (ie. Paul Chan, zines, Mercy Magazine, Manifesta using CC, Angelo Plessas) notions of archiving as performative or formative practice.

Kiki Claxton: Work in progress: www.http://institutionalarchive.weebly.com/

SB: ps all. am gonna collate all notes and bibliography for you so don't worry about adding to the word doc - if u have anything more to add post here xx

OK! I have collated most of what we discussed today - I am sure I am missing things so please add, but gen it looks really rich, and I like how it is unfolding - excited to know how it turns out tomorrow - don't forget to sign me in!! xxx Archive and documentation meeting 2.docx

Anna Ilchenko: Increasing speed of institutionalization http://www.e-flux.com/announcements/occupy-nigeria/

SB: http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/end-of-poverty/ did u notice the bit on Creative Commons here?

Global poverty did not just happen. It began with military conquest, slavery and colonization that resulted in the seizure of land, minerals and forced lab, Instant institution. Problematic, KGB, problematic. Maybe notions of the Anti-Archive might work? I post again: http://primaryinformation.org/

AI: Some thoughts, inspired by Potosi Priciple talk-Simplifying the Authorship (Creative Commons) -The idea of anonymity Process of artistic group formation in the 60s. The commune concept Examples:  Artempo: Where Time Becomes Art (Jean-Hubert Martin)- encyclopedic art exhibition The Potosi Principle(Alice Grescher, Adreas Siekmann, Max Jorge Hinderer) Occupy movement - can we implement similar practices into our group project

Ethical relationship with institutions:

-Impact on the exhibition policy/curatorial projects
-Impact on the aesthetic content of the project
-Circulation of the artwork in the worldwide context
-Site-specivity of the artwork (globalizing the local, localizing the global) balancing national identity vs. global connectivity
-Cultural industry as cultural hegemony in a relation to archiving/knowledge production?
-Theoretical approach of ethical relationship?

SB: nice - could you add it to the word doc or do u want me to?

AI: I'll do it . Achieve/Documentation minutes+App Archive and documentation meeting 2-2.docx

SB: yay!! going to sleep now. Or should I say..going Under (the) cover (s) x

SB: guys - can I start inviting people in the other Visual Cultures group to provide definitions? If i post it up, they can add definitions/images in the comments?

Lisa Mazza: re: glossary I think this is a decision that should be taken by the entire Ma lab group. I actually think that it would still be nice to use it as an "internal" tool rather then opening it up but I am very open to discuss it.

AI: About glossary wide exploitation.. I agree with Lisa's concerns, because I think that glossary bridges our group with the others. But on the other hand, we can still use the blog-blog for that and expand the glossary's usage as a platform for theoretical dialogue. What does everyone think about that?

SB: I think Kay Gee Bee has it pinned down. Going with it. Maybe we can propose this..but then again no one from lab is contributing except archivers - Anna in fact since we split.

AI: Guys, sorry out of topic. In ICA will be Programming Contemporary Culture sessions. On of them will be devoted to archives!!
Making archives public: digitisation and display Thursday 15 March, 6pm ICA Studio / Free admission http://us1.campaign-archive2.com/?u=a7582b348b629bff7bfb8d6f2&id=1444052dc8&e

Friday 10th February

Galia Kirilova: Hi guys,
Regarding the Glossary: I would suggest to keep it "private" and try to developed by the lab and then shared with the public.

Stef Bailey: Anna that archive thing at ICA sounds good! I bought the archive texts from the mit Whitechapel collabl too....I am really enjoying this thinking of performing the archive....as for the glossary, let's discuss this. I for one wouldn't mind..maybe we can have an archive glossary too? Maybe even a institutional one..ie asking people to define institution in general as well as the specific institutions we intend to deal with.

As for next week, I am writing my notes on the lab experience...form deform reform: a narrative, and am going to use taussig as my key reference...am also going to turn my presentation on space into a text that deals with notions of white cube etc...these can all be added to the relevant sections in the weebly...would be nice to start entering content..all of us..and I think names would be good as it simply states who is speaking as an individual within the collective ( am thinking of potosi here)...then next week if we have enough material we can set about performing the archive....should we contact white cube? Have we decided on day and time next week? Also Rachel should then be told to prep her own "lab narrative" as well as her notes on archiving and documentation?

GK: Good morning all!!!!

Hi Stef, Just a quick update from yesterday..
I called British Museum regarding the possibility to look at their archive. It turns out that we need to make an appointment to visit their archive. The lady suggested to sent an email and explain our needs and research as B. museum has different archive for each department. We were discussing to write a template letter that we can use for each institution we are going to contact.
Tate modern has free access to the archive but we need first to registrar and then make an appointment.

I am going to write the letter now and then I will send it to you guys to review it.

G.

Kiki Claxton: Sorry about the little silence from me. I knocked out at an extremely early and embarrassing time. Re Glossary: I feel we should keep it closed for now, and the possibly open it up after April when it becomes stagnant. I also agree with Lisa to ask the other Ma Labbers, and see what they think.

Re Excursions: Great work Galia if we could arrange it for next Wednesday at 2pm that would be amazing. For Sussex it is a similar thing.; but just a slight complication of it being at Sussex Uni near Brighton. Is this an excursion we want to take? If yes I have a car and could drive down but firstly a car only has five seat and we are 6 soon to be 7. I have also looked at trains and with southern we can get a return to Brighton for £20 for 4 people. Let me know what we are all thinking. I would be great if we could write one email and tailor it to the institution to which we are sending it.

GK: Hi Kiki,
About Brighton: maybe be can leave it for now and concentrate on the institutions in London. Get the job done! But if we have time in the future - will be an amazing opportunity to combine "business"with pleasure

KC: perfect! I'll crack onto the reply

Baiba Jake: Hi! I agree that the glossary should be kept within the Lab. There is so much information here, that it is hard to now answer to everything I'll go through all of it today and start to work on my notes, etc.

I actually would like to go and explore the Sussex archive. I personally think that it would be great to explore archives outside London as well, if we have the chance. Also Kiki gave good reference about it, so it seems that it would be worth it. Although, I understand that traveling there would be a bit tricky. Shall I still call the White Cube or are we sending them an e-mail as well? Please let me know, so that I can call them asap. Also, what time we should be going there?
B xxX Anna, that event looks really great. I am definitely up for going there.

GK: Baiba call White cube and see if they will agree on visiting them on Wednesday. I will prepare the letter for the others this evening as I'm at work today.

BJ: Ok! I just got response from White Cube gallery. The Head of the Archive Sophie Greig would be happy to talk to us. I am going to send her more information on what we are interested in and it would be great if you guys could let me know if there are any questions that you would like me to include in the letter?

Sunday 12th February

Kiki Claxton: Any more news for Wednesday?

Lisa Mazza: Hi all,  thanks Baiba and Galia for working on our visits. I just found this project by Markus Miessen et al which sounds quite interesting and from skimming it seems to touch upon questions we have also been discussing: The Archive as a Productive Space of Conflict http://archive.hfg-karlsruhe.de/ http://www.aaschool.ac.uk/VIDEO/lecture.php?ID=1337 Have a lovely Sunday you all. xx

Stef Bailey: great!! I second the round of thanks..really looking forward to Wednesday!

Baiba Jake: Sophie has confirmed our visit on Wednesday 4pm at Bermondsey. Galia, have any other places replied?
