Arnolfini, Bristol Museum Show Part 2
Museum Show Part 2
09 December 2011 -19 February 2012
Introduction
Museum Show Part 2 continues to investigate the roles museums play in presenting and making sense of our many different histories
and cultures. What is the museum for? Does the museum have a function for us in daily life? Do we still value the museum?
Challenging the purposes and traditions of the museum, these artist made institutions draw our attention to the basic structures and conditions necessary for holding a collection, making the contents meaningful and creating opportunities for learning. These are all functions we have come to expect of the museum.
While the museums shown here represent a very diverse range of ideas, all involve the fabric of daily life. Their examination of how we live, and what remains of us after we are gone, supplies us with additional questions about the museum's role as the space to record our history and memories, separate facts from fictions and leave lasting traces of us behind.
Each one of the museums shown here has produced their own guide. Very different in their presentation, they show clearly the very personal character a museum may have, whether large or small.
